the Fine Arts Quartet to perform chamber transcriptions of

two of Mozart’s great piano concertos, Nos. 16 and 26.

Reviving Mozart’s Piano Concertos in Chamber Form

The Fine Arts Quartet continues its acclaimed series presenting W.A. Mozart’s piano concertos in intimate chamber arrangements. These transcriptions, created by Ignaz Lachner in the late 19th century, were rediscovered by the quartet’s first violinist Ralph Evans and championed by distinguished Israeli- American pianist Alon Goldstein. The collaboration has already released four recordings on the prestigious Naxos label. A fifth will be released this year featuring Piano Concertos Nos. 18 & 22.

The July 13 program showcases two masterworks in D Major: Piano Concerto No. 16 (K. 451) and Piano Concerto No. 26 (K. 537). This pair will be recorded following this concert for release the following year. What distinguishes these arrangements is their innovative approach: the solo piano part preserves Mozart’s original composition with complete fidelity, while the orchestral accompaniment has been brilliantly reconfigured for string quartet with added double bass. This thoughtful transformation successfully translates Mozart’s concerto brilliance into an intimate chamber music setting without compromising the essential character and spirit of these masterworks.
