In 2002, the Fine Arts Quartet commissioned “Quintet for String Quartet and Bayan” by  the Russian composer Efrem Podgaits. The bayan is somewhat similar to the western accordion but has a different tone color, much fuller bass sound, greater range and purity of tone, and preferred by virtuosi for classical music.

Program:
Joseph Haydn – String Quartet, Op 77, No 1
Philip Glass – String Quartet No 2
Efim Podgaits – Quintet for String Quartet and bayan accordion
